Heartburn at THE BOX! | SBR.ph samples CROSSFITMNL!

15 Minutes of Hell
By: Carlos de Guzman

CROSSFITMNL recently invited SBR.ph to sample their style of workout. Being someone who’s been going to the gym for years already, I thought this would be easy. How hard can throwing balls, doing pullups, and jumping on blocks be right?

I was in for a big surprise.

Upon arriving at the gym (aptly called “THE BOX”), you’ll be greeted by this huge red door. Fits the place because soon those entering it will know that they’re in for a hell of a workout.

We were welcomed by CROSSFIT trainers Ferdie Catabian and Miggy Dy Buncio. They toured us around the facility, briefed us on what we would do and how to do the exercises.

The workout is limited to just 15 minutes. You’ll do as many repetitions  of the sets as you can within that time frame. The  standard/baseline number is 7. “Go for 7!” Miggy and Ferdie shouted. “7 Huh? Easy!” I said to myself.

When the buzzer sounded and the timer began.. I went through my sets and nailed the first three.

Then all hell broke loose.

My muscles were beginning to get heavy.  I don’t know if this was because I really lacked fitness coming from my sabbatical from triathlon training, or the workouts are just really hard!  Come set #4.   I can feel my heart burning already from exhaustion.  I looked at the time, I see there’s still 8 minutes left.  “STILL 8 MINUTES?!?” I shouted.   I finished set #4 and quickly thought if I can still get to the 7 mark. I did #5 and barely finished it.   My legs were shot.  My arms were dead.  I was really struggling jumping on the blocks!

After the 5th one was finished, I had enough.  I was burned out.  I was BONKING in tri-terms .  I had 4 mins left so I just decided to go for #6.   I finished with a total of 6 1/2 (I was hoping they would round the results off so I would reach the 7 standard!).  I was quickly shut down by the instructors as they told me, round offs aren’t allowed.  Your score is what you finished.

After the workout I wanted nothing more than to lay down on the floor and drink all the gatorade in the fridge.  I was toasted!  The rest of the guys who went with me suffered the same fate. But we all enjoyed the workout.

2 days after my muscles were sore as hell!  I could barely walk and lift my arms!  I’ve been doing weight training for years and this is probably the first time I’ve experienced this kind of pain.. and the catch is.. it only took 15 minutes!

Will I go back?  I probably will
