8th October 2011 – Kona, HawaiiChrissie Wellington has become World Champion for the fourth time in her career by storming to victory at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on Saturday.

The Brit put on an incredible performance by completing the staggering 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run in a time of 8:55.05.

In an astonishing race, Wellington held off a strong challenge from former Champion Miranda Carfrae to regain her title.

The victory is even more remarkable given that Wellington was involved in a bad crash during the build up to the race, affecting her final training preparations.

Final women’s standings:
1st:  Chrissie Wellington 08:55:08
2nd: Mirinda Carfrae 08:57:57
3rd: Leandra Cave 09:03:29
4th: Rachel Joyce 09:06:57
5th: Caroline Steffen 09:07:32
Wellington said of the victory, “It’s an amazing feeling and I can’t put it into words what it means to become World Champion for the fourth time. I was disappointed to miss out last year but this makes all of the training and hard work worthwhile. I hope my success can help to encourage more people back home in Britain to take up the sport”.
