First Fondo Manila Introduces Social Cycling to the Philippines

Cyclists have always loved the Philippines for the diverse terrain it offers. From the flat city streets to the steep and winding provincial highways, our roads offer a challenge to amateur and professional cyclists alike.

So it is a wonder why a social cycling event like Fondo Manila has never been organized, where instead of cyclists competing against each other, they enjoy each other’s company amid breathtaking views of the countryside.

Held recently was the First Fondo Manila that took riders from Sherwood Hills in Trece Martires to a spot overlooking the beaches of Caylabne in Ternate and back. The 100-kilometer stretch traced some of Cavite’s scenic landscapes, punctuated by mountain views on one side and the great South china sea on the other. Every twenty kilometers, hydration stops.

The First Fondo Manila also became the launching pad for Patrick Joson, a Yabang Pinoy advocate and volunteer, to spread the word about the country’s potential as a sports tourism destination. Patrick also reminded the participants of cycling safety and road safety. Universal cycling hand signals, for example, is the best way to communicate physical and mechanical emergencies to fellow cyclists, reducing mishaps. Patrick also reminded cyclists to always be mindful of other vehicles that we share the road with. He suggests biking single-file or by pairs so as not to take too much space on the road.
