YOUNG TRIATHLETES HEAD TO CEBU THIS AUGUST | Ironkids Philippines

Hundreds of children, 6 to 14 years old, expected to join Alaska IronKids Triathlon Year 4

This August 3, young Filipino triathletes will once again prove that they have “iron” strength and will as they all head off to Shangri-La Mactan Hotel Beach Front in Cebu for this year’s highly-anticipated Alaska IronKids Triathlon.

Hundreds of children, 6 to 14 years old, are already expected to join the annual race with their parents in tow. Registration is already ongoing and it looks like this year’s race will easily surpass last year’s record of 134 participants with children from different parts of the country already signed up this early.  It is open to children that are new to the sport as well as those who have already competed in other sporting events.

Considered to be one of local junior sports’ most prestigious races, Alaska IronKids Triathlon is the local franchise of the international IronKids Series, which has many notable alumni including Olympians Hunter Kemper and Nick Radkewich, Laura Reback and Douglas Mosiniak Jr. It is the junior counterpart of the annual international sporting event IronMan 70.3 Triathlon, which will be held a day after the Alaska IronKids, allowing children to also witness their favorite adult triathletes compete. It tests children’s skill, discipline and endurance in three different sports:  swimming, biking and running. The race is divided into girls and boys division, in four age categories: 6-8 years old, 9-10 y/o, 11-12 y/o and 13-14 y/o.  All finishers are given medals.

Expected to be on the starting line to defend her title is consistent top finisher and Alaska Milk Drink endorser Tara Borlain, 10, who has remained unbeatable.  Also expected to top their individual categories are Syrah Ruth Uy and Eric Almendral, who dominated the 6-8 y/o category in last year’s Cebu triathlon leg; Juris Aaron Tan for 9-10 y/o; Lauren Justine Plaza and Yuan Chiongbian for 11-12 y/o and Victorija Deldio and Mark Gregory Pile for 13-14 y/o. Alaska IronKids is part of Alaska Milk Corporation’s advocacy campaign “Nutrition. Action. Champion.”, which highlights the importance of proper nutrition and sports in the physical, mental and emotional development of children. The campaign is quite timely considering that two out of 10 Filipino children below 10 years old are found to be overweight while three out of 10 children are found undernourished in the latest survey of the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).

Since it started in 2010, Alaska IronKids has become a symbol for active and healthy lifestyle among children. Its successful races have encouraged children to take care of their bodies through exercise and balanced diet and have instilled the values of determination, hard work, teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.

So far, Alaska IronKids has already mounted four races this year: run races at the UP Diliman Track Oval and Mall of Asia and aquathlons at Ateneo De Manila Grade School and Marist School in Marikina. The last race for the year, another triathlon, is scheduled on October 20 at the Palms Country Club in Alabang.

This year’s Alaska IronKids Triathlon is brought to you by Alaska Chocolate Powdered Milk and sponsored by Aqua Sphere, Gatorade, Prudential Guarantee, K-Swiss, Second Wind, L Time Studio, and Regent
