2015 Regent 5150 | Race Results and Review

Congratulations to all the winners and finishers of the 2015 Regent 5150! It was a very hot and humid race dominated by Aussies, who took 5 out of the 6 podium spots.

Sam Betten set the pace and was the man to beat as he swam an “almost” race best swim time of 18:16. Eventual 4th placer Clayton Fettel  got the fastest swim split with a time of 18:16. Mitchell Kirby and Casey Munro, both from Australia, went head to head almost the entire race but it was Kibby who eventually built a gap on the run and finish in 2:01:25. Munro finished 7 secs after with a time of 2:01:31.

In the women’s division, Belinda Granger showed her veteran experience as she edged out Dimity-Lee Duke to win first place and become the champion of the inaugural Regent 5150. Granger topped the women’s overall with a time of 2:21:46 while Duke finished second in 2:23:24. Lone non-aussie Filipino Monica Torres handily won 3rd place with a time of 2:25:07.

It was Banjo Norte and LC Langit who ruled the Filipino Elite division. Banjo finished the race in 2:02:56 while Langit crossed the line in 2:34:54.

Review :

With Regent Foods becoming the new title sponsor of 5150, the race set itself apart by having new venues for the race briefing, expo, and even the race finish line.

The expo and race briefing was done in the exclusive Subic Bay Yatch Club were participants were treated to various treats from Regent as well as unlimited amounts of Melona (which we liked a lot!).

The swim also featured a new style wherein participants were corralled and organized via their “predicted” swim splits. If you’re a sub 25 swimmer, you’re the first to go. The participants were released in intervals. We had mixed thoughts over this style as we’re so used to the classic gun + mass start swim but there’s nothing wrong innovating. :)

What do you guys think about the timed release swim start?  Share your thoughts in our comments section!

The bike course features the unique 5150 bike route wherein participants got the chance to put their heads down and go as aero as they want on the airport. It was hills all the way as athletes climbed up to Ocean Adventure, traverse IDESS, and climb some more towards to top of Tarlac road.

All in all, as expected, it was a successful race organized by Sunrise Events. Though a complete departure from previous 5150’s in terms of look and feel, we definitely welcome the idea of exploring new venues! And keep those melona’s coming!

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)
