Known as the Crown Jewel of Asia, IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu has built a prestigious reputation over the years, attracting participants from 60 countries. The race will start at the scenic sandy beaches of The Mactan Newtown property in Lapu-Lapu City, featuring a 1.9km ocean swim, followed by a challenging 90km bike course across the iconic CCLEX Bridge towards Cebu City and back to Lapu-Lapu City. The final leg will be a demanding 21.1km run, taking participants through the heritage streets of Mactan Island.
The event’s popularity is evident as it consistently sells out quickly after opening registration. Beyond being a premier sporting competition, IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu has become a captivating spectacle, with passionate supporters cheering on the athletes.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Quirante Chan expressed enthusiasm about hosting IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu and proudly showcasing the region’s captivating locales and adventurous spirit. The city is committed to ensuring the event’s success, collaborating closely with organizers to manage traffic, emergency services, and medical facilities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants and spectators.
Following a successful staging last year after a pandemic-induced break, the inclusion of the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), the Philippines’ longest sea-crossing bridge, has further heightened excitement, providing a unique island-to-island experience through its engaging looping course.
Hon. Ma. Cynthia K. Chan, District Representative of Lapu-Lapu City, anticipates the event’s positive impact on local economies through increased tourism. “Lapu-Lapu City, and indeed the Philippines, is not only a tropical paradise but also an enticing sports and adventure destination. We eagerly anticipate showcasing the awe-inspiring locations where these races take place,” she declared.
Princess Galura, Regional Director of the IRONMAN Group Philippines, acknowledged the remarkable growth of the event over the past decade. “Last year witnessed nearly 2,000 participants, a commendable attendance rate, particularly amid the soft lockdown. This year, we are eager to stage a full-fledged comeback to the festivities, with a particular focus on encouraging greater women’s participation,” she emphasized.
The IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu will be a pivotal component of The IRONMAN Group’s 2023-2024 Season Pass & Flex 90 offerings, granting athletes the opportunity to participate in multiple IRONMAN & 70.3 races across Oceania and Asia with cost-saving benefits. The Flex90 option offers registrants the flexibility to alter race dates without penalties.
