Ironman China Swim Cancelled!

Breaking news!

Just got word that the swim portion of Ironman China has been cancelled.

This link confirms it.

A quick look at Pilipinas IM China, FB group of the Filipino Ironman China participants, reveals that a lot of are already thinking of quitting the event.

Here’s a quick look at the statements of the participants.

“just went online and saw it….think I will cancel. sayang ang $500 for a duathlon!”

“don’t want my 1st IM to be missing a swim”

“I’m a terrible swimmer…but if I was going to China for a Kona slot I would want to do it the RIGHT way and get it by swimming. If you qualify without swimming are you going to feel like a ‘faker’?” <— question from beyondtransition.com

“Oh well. Anyway, GAME ON still…”

“F@ck!!! It can’t be called Ironman now if there’s no swim. Masasayang lang gastos!”

“Do the bike run.. these things happen”

The lucky break is that given the unfortunate incident, Ironman China is giving the participants an option for a full refund.

I personally, had I not been sick, would still join. But I understand 100% the sentiments of the participants.. especially the first timers.

If you were in their place, would you still do it?

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)

  1. I’m registered for this IM70.3 event. I did it for the first time last year and did not finish in regulation. I did training all year and I am set (or was set) to finish in a very decent time. It is not an ironman without the swim. Unless you are a frequent racer, have lots of opportunities, and this is not a personal test, you will feel shafted.

    Welcome to China.

Doing the full IM without the swim is still a decent accomplishment.
