Ask The Coach | 1st Time Triathlon at Subit | Question #5

Wena Dalosa of Quezon City is about to take on her very first triathlon at SUBIT this coming May. Armed with only 3 weeks of gym training, what can our online coach suggest to her? Read on to see Jomacs advice.

From Wena Dalosa:

Hi coach! I’m planning to join my first ever triathlon at SUBIT (sprint) on May 1. I have been regularly going to the the gym for three weeks now, using the stationary bike and treadmill and doing some weight trainings. I can only do swimming on weekends. Would this be enough for me to be ready for the triathlon? Can you please devise a training program for me? Thanks!

From Coach Jomac:

Hi Wena, Actually, I don’t practice giving programs via online for beginners, because I always recommend that beginners focus on form, technique, etc. Training indoors is fine, especially for experienced athletes. But for a beginner like you, it is important to simulate race conditions. Bike handling, breaking/cornering is very important, and can not be practiced on a stationary bike. Safety is very important in cycling. If you’re really determined to join your first triathlon, you should set aside the time for it.

Treadmill training is fine, many professional athletes train on the treadmill. However, I always emphasize the importance of proper run form to avoid injury. Feel free to contact me via Facebook, search for TriMac Coaching, to join a free trial session with me or any of the other TriMac Coaches.

Goodluck!

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)
