Dakak National Age-Group Triathlon | Race Results and Review

Congratulations to the winners and finishers of the DAKAK National Age-Group Triathlon! The event was a huge success and everytone had a blast! To the participants, what can you say about the venue and the “flat” bike course? :)

17-year-old U.P. scholar Mary Pauline Fornea withstood a grueling road trip from Davao City to Dapitan City to rule the female sprint race of the first ever Dakak National Age-Group Triathlon held on Sunday in an out-and-back course at the scenic Punto del Desembarco de Rizal.

Fornea, a Department of Science and Technology (DOST)  scholar at the University of the Philippines campus in Davao City, clocked one hour, 34 minutes and 29 seconds to beat 18-year-old Jenefer Paloma of Cagayan de Oro City by 11 minutes.

A varsity swimmer, the 17-year-old Fornea registered the fastest time in the swimming leg at 12 minutes and 12 seconds. She also posted a remarkable time of 54:04 in the bike leg after completing the 750m swim, 20K bike and 5K run course in 28:13.

Fornea’s total clocking was even better than the 2:14:13 posted by male sprint race winner Glenn Cabunoc.

Fornea commuted with her mother Ofelia from their house in Catalunan in Davao City to Dakak beach taking connecting bus trips in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamiz and Dipolog.

In the standard 1.5K swim-40K bike-10K run triathlon event, however, it was the Cagayan de Oro City pair of Neil Catiil and Candy Lu who claimed the overall crown in the male and female divisions, respectively. Catiil clocked 22:26 in the swim, 1:26:33 in the bike and 44:01 in the run event for a total of 2:33:00.

Ralph Martin Sios-e of Cebu came in second at 2:51:31 (26:16, 1:35:43 and 49:32) even as Fidel Ovas of Dumaguete finished third at 2:54:52 (31:11, 1:26:20 and 57:21). Lu, on the other hand topped the distaff side with a 4:08:14 (34:35, 2:19:36 and 1:14:03) performance.

At second place was Ylang Ylang Jordan of Dumaguete at 4:23:35 (37:00, 2:27:26 and 1:19:09) and at third was Caroline Iris Armogenia also of Dumaguete with a clocking of 4:52:20 (38:45, 2:54:21 and 1:19:14).

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP)-sanctioned event was organized by triathlete Dexter Araquel of Timeline Digital Productions, Inc. and fully supported by former Congressman Romeo “Nonong” Jalosjos, Mayor Dominador G. Jalosjos, Jr.,LGU’s Dapitan City, PNP-Dapitan, Cong. Bullet Jalosjos, Fantasyland, Dipolog Dapitan Camera Club, ORACIS Radio Club, REACT Shrine Group, HEMs, SevenOneHundred.com, Dipolog Design Center, BADI, Zanorte Cyclers Unlimited, Volunteers and the People of Dapitan City.

The male age-group winners were Catiil in the 18-29; Paulo Oano in the 30-34; Gregie Pamakid in the 35-39; Simon Flores in the 40-44; and Junki Flores in the 45-49. Winning age-group gold medals in the distaff side were Jordan in the 29-below and Lu in the 30-over.

“The swim race started at the Dakak’s world famous beach wherein the triathletes embraced a calm and perfect weather. The bike course was brutal and challenging. The run leg was so smooth due the good weather and an improvise shower provided by the water district of Dapitan City and hydration station by Nature’s Spring Mineral Water. Everybody had fun,” said Araquel who promised a bigger Dakak Triathlon next year.
