2012 Ironman 70.3 Philippines Cebu | Race Map | Course Analysis

The course map of the 2012 Ironman 70.3 Philippines Cebu is finally out! From the looks of it, looks like the 2012 edition of the most prestigious race in the country is going to be fast and more importantly, scenic!

Few key features of the race that we immediately noticed.

SWIM

Finally, the much awaited open-water ocean swim! This means extra buoyancy for all the sinkers out there. Expect this swim to be a heck easier than the man made lake we swam in the previous 3 years. I haven’t been to Cebu yet but I’m expecting crystal clear waters!

  • 2 loops
  • Speedsuit friendly! There’s nothing more a speedsuit loves than the open water. Check out the SLS3 Fobic Speedsuit which generated nothing but rave reviews when it was beta-tested at the 4k swim of the TIMEX 226 Iron Distance Triathlon.
  • I have no info yet on the current but if the water is calm then no problem. But if there’s a current, swimming parallel is going to be really interesting!
  • Parallel Swim = Direction is either east to west or west to east. Not yet determined by the organizers.

BIKE

Upon exiting T1, riders will ride up to 29k before the first turn around (BTA1), then will turn around again at the 45k mark (BTA2 =45k total) and then ride all the way back to BTA1 (61km total) . From BTA1, athletes will now ride the final 29 km’s and go back to the transition area for T2.

  • A fast bike course!
  • Scenic! Check out where we’re riding!
  • Bring out those deep dish wheels! ( just make sure you have the legs to back it up :) )
  • Each BTA is 16km = having loops on the bike means you can pace your ride properly and be able to know  your standing during the race as you can see the other athletes.

RUN

Nothing I love more than a two loop 21k run course! Now what does this mean?

  • You can break down the run into four 5.25k segments ( How hard can a 5k run be right? :) )
  • You can easily see where the other competitors are and pace accordingly
  • Scenic! Again, check out where we’re running!

I don’t know about you guys but the race course got me really excited! Plus you can be sure the organizers and the city of Cebu will pull out all the strings and leave no stone unturned for the 2012 edition of Ironman 70.3 Philippines.

Check back soon for the elevation of the bike course! We’re working on it!

Also to everyone familiar with the area, let us know if you have other inputs! Email us or leave a comment!

See you guys there! In the meantime, keep on training!

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)

  1. i just hope that the city of cebu will really take care of the road quality from shang all the way to before entering the south coastal road… SRP for instance is regular route for big trailer trucks heading towards the pier area. otherwise its going to be a long bumpy ride…

  2. awesome analyses, hope everything will turn out great. I know this will be better than the mud i swam last year. and i now cebu will host one exciting ironman. BUT, i was just there last tue and wed and checked out the conditions. there were some points to consider. SWIM, the swim is on the beach ( rocky) of shang rila , and its not as sandy ( well its imported sand from somewher else) so prepare those FRODO feet for the sharp rocks. the water is not calm ( well the two days there at 6 to 7 am was not. T1, going up from the swim will be a long run to the bikes, its uphill from the beach to the parking lots, unless they put the T1 on the grassy 9 hole golf course ( which i doubt) its not even flat) now going out of the T1 were hard sharp small humps, unless you could ride the side of the curb. then getting out is the clincher, sharp turns, blind spots, ( unless they put mirrors which no one uses) and its a one lane road. yes we can see everyone coming in and back ( really close) ( call) i dunno if the turnarounds are safe for a 20 to 38 km u turn but who nows. scenic, unless you wanna see the establishments left and right, ( lechon manok stalls) and other hotels. but i hope i am totally wrong about this
