Sunrise events once again raises the bar when it comes to organizing triathlon races. It’s not perfect (because there’s no such thing as perfect), but the Century Tuna 5150 Philippines is PRETTY. DAMN. CLOSE. Hey, I loved it so much that even if I had one of my worst Olympic distance races, I can say that I got my money’s worth because I went so slow and in return, I got to enjoy every kilometer of it! :)

Comparing last years edition to this year :

Pre-race / registration : One of the innovations that we loved are the temporary sticker race number tattoos . We expect this to be the standard from now on. As an athlete, it saves you a lot of time and extra stress on race day as you no longer need to line up for body marking. One bad thing about the stickers though, if you have hairy legs, prepare for a painful session trying to remove the em! :P

The swim : We loved the new point to point swim. Compared to last year when we were made to go straight for a couple meters before making a u turn then straight all the way to finish. One qualm that we had about the exit is that, it’s quite hard to get on the ramp coming from the swim. Unless you have strong arms and can pull yourself up on the ramp with ease, that unfortunately led to a little bit of  traffic and build up at the swim exit. An extra flight of stairs would easily solve this :). Good thing there were marshalls helping the athletes get out of the water!

The bike : It’s exactly (correct us if we’re wrong) the same as last year’s bike route. Unless the Subic officials decided to make the hills a little steeper, it’s still one of the best bike courses ever. A good combination of flats and steep hills. We absolutely loved the aid station on top of IDESS, the ice cold Gatorade is a life saver!

The run : We loved the adjustment the organizers made with the run course. Last year, a lot complained about the traffic going back to the finish line where athletes were forced to run on the sidewalk by the onslaught of traffic and vehicles. That made the run dangerous as the sidewalk contained gaps which can easily lead to an ankle sprain if you miss time your step. This year, there was none of that. Vehicle traffic was controlled the roads were closed just for the event.

The medal + trophies + finisher shirts : Unique wooden medals and trophies + 2xu finisher shirts – `NUFF SAID

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)
