Century Tuna IRONMAN Philippines 2018 Receives Massive Support From Home Country

And just like that, registration for the Century Tuna IRONMAN Philippines 2018 is officially closed.

One day. That’s all it took for the Century Tuna IRONMAN Philippines to close. As of today, you may still register, but you’ll be placed on the waitlist.

It has long been a dream of every triathlete in this country to race the mecca of triathlon on their home soil, and they’ll finally get the chance on June 3, 2018 as the Philippines plays host to its first full IRONMAN.

Coming in as the proud title sponsor is Century Tuna, which has been a title sponsor of the IRONMAN 70.3 since 2015. With the IRONMAN, Century Tuna continues its mission to inspire more Filipinos to pursue their own health and wellness journey.

The men behind the race. Fred Uytengsu of Sunrise Events, Inc., and Greg Banzon of Century Tuna Philippines

For Century Tuna, the event is not just for the triathlete and their families, loved ones, and supporters, but also for the entire country. Greg Banzon encouraged everyone and wants the whole nation, even local communities, to go to Subic on race day to witness this big event.

And then there was the curious case of the 1000 participants limit.

Here’s why.

As for Fred Uytengsu, safety has always been the number one priority. The logistics of holding a race of this magnitude is sure to test the limits of the organizing company, Sunrise Events, Inc.

Simply put, they want to make sure that they’ll be able to pay attention to all the athletes registered throughout the swim, bike, and run segments.

Reaching 1000 (or exceeding it) means a lot of things, but the most important of all is that the Philippines is really ready for the full distance.

“The race is 30% physical and 70% mental. Your mind will quit before your body, and that’s the key. You should be mentally tough.” said Uytengsu.

“I’ve signed up because it’s not only about doing the full ironman and having the bragging rights. You will also be part of history. This is the first full ironman here in our country and it is with pride and honor that I’m able to sign up and join. So, see you at the start line and I hope to see you all at the finish line!” said Banzon. “So since I’m not going to race, I will be at the finish line and wait for you, I will be the one to put the medal around your neck. Hehe!” chided Uytengsu.
