A great all-rounder.

We had the privilege of being one of the first in the country to try the latest shoe from Brooks’ world-renowned cushioning line, the Ghost 12.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Not only is it Ghost Month, but a lot of Ghosting was also happening somewhere in a world far, far, away from triathlon. *hint*

Seriously speaking, as most of you may have noticed, it’s been a while since we last posted a gear review. Why? It’s not because we weren’t interested anymore, but rather, we just weren’t training and using any product enough to give a definite review. Luckily, Brooks came in at the right time and sent a pair to us to use and abuse just as we were prepping our gear for comeback attempt # (too many to count).

INITIAL THOUGHTS

We like big shoes, and upon opening the box, you’ll immediately notice that Brooks weren’t really keen on making the Ghost 12 the next lightest cushioning shoe in the market. Our pair registered at 10.9oz for a size 10. Also, if you’ll look at the colorway, you’ll notice that the colors don’t really pop, unlike similar shoes from other brands. At least, for the one that we got.

But maybe, that’s where the Brooks Ghost 12, stands out.

PURPOSE TEST

As with every cushioning shoe, its purpose is to make your run as comfortable as possible. And after giving the Ghost 12 a few K’s, we found out that, that’s where it does its talking. The shoes are designed for neutral feet so it was quite a challenge breaking the shoes in. Being flat-footed, it hard to find cushioning shoe that would work well with our flat-as-a-pancake arch.

The shoe doesn’t specialize in any specific area, but rather, prides itself on being one of the few that ticks every checklist in every cushioning shoe requirement. It provides great cushioning and support without being too heavy for speedwork but light enough to help you in your long runs. This shoe is a solid all-rounder.

FEATURES

The Ghost 12 features the combination Brooks’ signature BioMoGo DNA and DNA loft midsole. From the website, it says that it works together to provide a just-right softness underfoot without losing responsiveness and durability. From our experience, we liked the cushioning and felt that it was more than enough for our heavy frame. The ride was stable and the heel-to-toe transitions felt smooth. If you’re a heel striker like me, you’ll love this shoe.

One thing we noticed is that we felt the need to slide our foot to the rear edge of the shoe to get extra support for the arch. But that’s just us being really picky.

Brooks’ Segmented Crash Pads does a great job not only in providing cushioning but also excellent grip. We felt more and more confident in the shoe with every step. The grip on the road was solid.

Using 3d printed overlays, the upper mesh was breathable and the toe box provided our toes with enough room to wiggle and snuggle.

VERDICT

The Brooks Ghost 12 definitely makes a case for being one of the top everyday trainers. This shoe will perform and excel in literally every type of run that you want to do. It accommodates multiple foot types and is a safe bet as a shoe that you can pick any day of the week when you want to hit the road for a quick run.

Like any classic, this one doesn’t rely on bright colorways or fancy features to prove its worth. It stands out in its simplicity. It just works and gets the job done.
