On October 26, 2024, over 2,400 of the world’s best male triathletes will gather in the scenic town of Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i, to compete in the highly anticipated VinFast IRONMAN World Championship. This year’s event promises another exciting chapter in triathlon history, as participants from 85 countries showcase their grit, determination, and athletic prowess across a challenging course set against the island’s breathtaking backdrop.
After last year’s groundbreaking women’s race in Nice, France, the men’s edition returns to Kona, reaffirming the island’s status as the spiritual home of the IRONMAN. The iconic race will feature both professional athletes and age-group competitors, all vying for a chance to conquer the grueling 140.6-mile course.
Global Representation at Its Best
With athletes representing regions from every corner of the globe, the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship boasts a truly international field. European athletes lead the pack, accounting for 47% of all participants, while North America and Oceania contribute 29% and 10%, respectively. Smaller, yet passionate contingents from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East complete the lineup. Notably, the U.S. has the largest single-country representation, with 638 athletes.
Among the most remarkable participants is 84-year-old Warren Hill from New Zealand, the oldest athlete in this year’s race. On the other end of the spectrum, Poland’s Wojciech Poparda, at 20 years old, will be the youngest competitor. These athletes, along with every participant, bring their unique stories of resilience and determination to Kona.
Inspiring Journeys to Kona
The IRONMAN World Championship has always been more than just a race; it’s a stage where personal triumphs and human endurance shine. This year, several athletes stand out for their extraordinary stories:
- Team Agar: Father-son duo Jeff and Johnny Agar return to Kona, seeking redemption after their 2016 attempt ended in disappointment. Despite Johnny’s cerebral palsy, the Agars have since completed several IRONMAN events, and now, they’re determined to cross the finish line together in Hawai’i.
- Michael Andreasen: Standing at 4’7″ with Hypochondroplasia, Michael refuses to let his short stature define his limits. Supported by the Challenged Athletes Foundation, he aims to prove that “Anything is Possible” as he tackles Kona’s demanding course.
- Douglas Griffiths: Diagnosed with cancer just a year ago, this Australian Naval Officer is determined to finish the race that has been his lifelong dream, proving to himself and others that he won’t let cancer define his life.
- Billy Monger: A double amputee and former racecar driver, Billy has already raised millions for Comic Relief. He’s now set to break barriers once again, aiming to become the fastest double amputee to finish the IRONMAN World Championship.
These athletes, along with countless others, embody the IRONMAN spirit of perseverance, resilience, and the belief that anything is possible.
Kona’s Legendary Course
Starting with a 2.4-mile swim in the crystal-clear waters of Kailua Bay, athletes will then face the notorious 112-mile bike leg, battling Kona’s famous crosswinds and lava fields. The final 26.2-mile marathon run course, which takes athletes along Ali’i Drive and the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, is just as punishing as it is inspiring, with a backdrop of enthusiastic spectators and volcanic beauty.
This year’s race is expected to be more thrilling than ever as athletes push themselves to the limit in one of the most challenging and revered triathlons in the world.
Join the Celebration of Human Spirit
The 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship is not just about the competition; it’s a celebration of the human spirit. Spectators, both in person and those watching from around the globe, will witness athletes defy expectations and inspire future generations of triathletes.
