But for the 2024 Ironman World Championship in Nice, France, the game is changing, especially for women. Ironman has introduced a new qualification process that aims to level the playing field and offer more opportunities for female athletes to participate.
The Need for Change
Ironman CEO Andrew Messick revealed that the traditional qualification process had been met with an underwhelming response, particularly for the women’s event in Nice. The slots for the championship were not being filled, prompting Ironman to rethink their approach.
The New Qualification Criteria
The new qualification process offers a variety of pathways for women to secure a slot in the championship. These include:
- Podium Finishers at Select Ironman 70.3 Races: Athletes can now qualify by finishing on the podium at specific Ironman 70.3 events.
- Age Group Ranking Invitational Slots: These are offered to athletes based on their age group rankings.
- 2023 World Championship Race in Kona: Slots will also be available via the 2023 World Championship race.
The Impact
The changes are extraordinary and aim to attract a competitive field of 2,000 or more athletes in Nice. “We want everyone who has qualified to feel like they have accomplished something meaningful,” said Messick.
The Future
Messick hinted that if the new qualification criteria prove effective, they might be implemented in future championships as well.
