#EPIC Piece of Philippine Triathlon History

How’s this for a #TBT? What were you doing last 2002? Take a look at the 47 brave souls who signed up for the first ever Iron-distance triathlon in the country 12 years ago. A timely post since the Enervon Activ 226, the country’s ONLY iron-distance race, is also happening this weekend.

The picture is owned and taken by Ricky Ledesma of firstwavetri and posted on his facebook account. It is, of course, reprinted here with permission for all to see (and marvel).

The vanguards of our sport :)

What’s amazing about the start list is that some are still going strong up to know like Alvin Alindogan (10:55:23!), Noy Jopson, Frank “The Legend” Lacson, etc. Some have transformed themselves into amazing coaches like Coach Ani de Leon, Miguel “Ige” Lopez, Moi Yamoyam, Omar Paredes, PJ Rivera and Abet Alon Alon. The first three I mentioned are also into Coaching  :)

Some are still very much into the sport like Maiqui Dayrit and Ernie Lopez (yup, THE Ernie Lopez), and of course, Fred Uytengsu.

Other names that rings a bell (to us) are Dennis Mascardo, Karlo Magpayo, Larry Ocampo, and Rune Stroem. How many can you identify?

Not included in the list are Al Gonzales and Alden Arellano who finished but didn’t make the 17 hour cut off.

SBR.ph Team

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)
