When Desperation Leads To Inspiration

“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” – Marcus Aurelius

Cerefino Angco is a 47 year old living in Cebu who wanted nothing more than to visit his deceased parents in Bohol in time for All Souls Day. But there’s just one problem, he also had nothing more in his wallet.

There are multiple news stories about people who’d rather do desperate acts in desperate times. But instead of committing a crime, Angco chose to put it all in his shoulders just to get the job done.

He even begged off from asking people for change in order to afford the P250 – P500 boat fare as he was embarrassed about it.

At 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018, Angco attempted to swim the Cebu Strait, an 18 kilometer open sea stretch which separates Cebu from Bohol. Without any form of training, it didn’t take long before he gassed out and was found cramping and holding on to a styrofoam floater at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Angco has been in the water for 9 hours without any form of nutrition, support or even goggles before members of the local sea patrol rescued him out of the water off Talisay City.

It didn’t take long before Talisay City Councilor Jojo Bacaltos found out about the story and brought Ceferino Angco to the station and sponsored his ticket.

Angco took the 1:30 p.m. trip and went on his way to Bohol.
