Slugfest at Day 1 of Underwater Hockey | SEA Games 2019

Four countries, one goal. The battle for Underwater Hockey supremacy in South East Asia began with Singapore topping the rankings in day 1 of the Underwater Hockey SEA Games 2019 Tournament.

UWH 4×4 Men
Game 1 – SGP 9, MAS 2
Game 2 – PHI 3, INA 3

The games kicked off with the 4×4 division with the Philippine men’s team getting a close draw against Indonesia. The game was tied 2-2 with Indonesia taking the lead with 1:43 left remaining in the second half. Team Philippines managed to score with a minute left to tie the game. In the other half of the pool, Singapore edged out newcomer Malaysia, 9-2.

Game 3 – SGP 11, MAS 0
Game 4 – PHI 6, INA 0

Games 3-4 saw the Singapore and Philippine women make easy work of both Malaysia and Indonesia teams, leaving both opponents scoreless and setting both teams up for an epic game one finale.

UWH 4×4 Men
Game 5 – PHI 7, MAS 0
Game 6 – SGP 2, INA 1

The Philippine men regained their momentum and beat Malaysia, 7-nil. The surprise of the tournament is definitely Indonesia. Even if they lost to Singapore in this game, a lot can be said about how quickly they learned the sport and developed.

UWH 4×4 Women
Game 7 – PHI 7, MAS 0
Game 8 – SGP 8, INA 0

Games 7 and 8 were virtual replicas of Games 3 and 4. The only difference is that both teams swapped opponents. Singapore and Philippines defeated their opponents and held them scoreless once again.

UWH 4×4 Men
Game 9 – PHI 2, SGP 2
Game 10 – INA 9, MAS 0

Game 9 of the tournament was an underwater slugfest as the score was tied 1-1 in the first half. Singapore led the entire first half until the Philippines managed to tie with 6 seconds left on the clock! With the game tied, both teams exchanged blows until the Philippines got a break when a foul was called against Singapore, taking one of their players out. Team Philippines took the lead with 1:30 left remaining in the clock until a strong push by Singapore broke the Philippines’ defense and managed to score a goal to tie the game.. with 20 seconds left on the clock! That was close!

In the other game, the promising men’s team from Indonesia beat Malaysia 9-0.

#UWH 4×4 Women
Game 11 – SGP 2, PHI 1
Game 12 – INA 8, MAS 1

Philippines and Singapore, who were both undefeated and left their previous opponents scoreless, squared off in the much-awaited final game of the day. Singapore drew first blood and built an early 2 point cushion to end the first half. It wasn’t until 4:25 left in the final quarter when the Philippines broke free from Singapore’s defense and managed to make a long breakaway for the goal. The Philippines pressured Singapore’s defense ’till the final seconds but just didn’t have enough time to even the score.
