The upcoming 2023 AST Duathlon Championships, set to take place in the sprawling, state-of-the-art facilities of New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac, promises to be a thrilling event for both athletes and sports enthusiasts. Organized by Triathlon Philippines (TriPhil) under the leadership of its new president Ramon Marchan, the event marks a significant milestone in the country’s sports calendar.
The championships, scheduled for November 26, 2023, from 4:00 am to 11:00 am, will feature several race distances catering to different skill levels. Participants can choose from the Standard Distance (10km run, 40km bike, 5km run), Sprint Distance (5km run, 20km bike, 2.5km run), and Super Sprint (2.5km run, 10km bike, 2.5km run).
Competitors are divided into various categories including Elite, Junior Elite, Paratri, Youth, and various age groups, ensuring a wide range of participation and competition. Notably, the event will miss the presence of top triathletes Kim Mangrobang and Fernando Casares, who have commitments to another Asian Duathlon competition.
The registration fees for the event vary based on the distance and the time of registration. They range from Php 3,500 to Php 9,000 (US$ 70 to US$ 180), with early bird, regular, and late registration phases.
Strict adherence to race rules is mandated for all participants, including the requirement for body markings, designated bike racking spots, and prohibition of bare torso biking or running. Additionally, athletes must abide by all traffic rules and safety protocols as vehicular traffic will be controlled but not closed.
For the Elite category, only regular road bikes that comply with World Triathlon rules are permitted, while Age Groupers can choose from a variety of non-drafting bikes, excluding disk wheels.
The 2023 AST Duathlon Championships not only represent an opportunity for athletes to showcase their skills but also play a crucial role in scouting potential talents for future international competitions like the 2025 Thailand Southeast Asian Games. Marchan emphasizes the importance of this event in the broader context of nurturing and identifying new talent in the country.
