We got a letter from Tommy de la Cruz, an aquathlete who’s planning to do triathlons in the future. He already has a mountain bike but is thinking if he should level up to a road bike or a tri bike. Should he make the investment? Or is his MTB good enough for the meantime? Read on and see what our SBR.ph Online Coach, Coach Ani de Leon-Brown has to say.
From Tommy:
Coach, I wanted to try triathlon, actually I swim, I bike and I run, but no experience yet in triathlon. I did aquathlon my first was the Ateneo Aquathlon. I had a bike, MTB setup. Do I need to buy a tri-bike/road bike, or can I use my MTB for the meantime, I will just change to slick tires and rigit fork. Is there any rule in the triathlon that the athlete can only use road/tri-bike?
Thank you
From Coach Ani:
Dear Tommy,
There are no rules against using mountain bikes in triathlons. You can use any type of bike as an amateur athlete, as long as there are no hidden engines attached! The only triathletes who have to follow certain bike restrictions are those racing in the professional category. It is good for you to get a feel for triathlon racing first with a currently owned/ borrowed bike then if you feel like stepping it up you can start considering investing in a triathlon-specific or road bike.
Enjoy!
