Making Waves with Eco-Conscious Swimming

In a groundbreaking move for sports and environmental advocacy, the Department of Tourism Region VI (DOT-6) successfully launched the first leg of the Western Visayas International Open Water Swim Circuit in Sipalay City, Philippines, from February 17 to 18, 2024. This event marked the beginning of a series aimed at promoting sustainable tourism through the lens of competitive swimming, attracting 146 swimmers to the serene waters of southern Negros Occidental.

A New Wave of Tourism and Sport

The Western Visayas International Open Water Swim Circuit is not merely a competition; it’s a clarion call for environmental stewardship and community involvement. Spearheaded by DOT-6, the circuit aims to highlight the beauty and ecological significance of Western Visayas, encouraging participants and spectators alike to engage in responsible tourism practices.

The First Splash: Sipalay City

Sipalay City, known for its breathtaking beachscapes, set the stage for the circuit’s first leg, offering swimmers a chance to compete in a stunning natural setting while emphasizing the importance of conservation. The event featured three distance categories (1.5K, 3K, and 5K) across five age groups, showcasing the inclusive nature of the sport.

The Road Ahead: A Circuit of Beauty and Responsibility

With three more legs to go—Sicogon Island, Taklong Island, and Boracay Island—the circuit promises to be a journey through some of the most picturesque and environmentally significant locations in the Philippines. Each leg is designed to offer a unique swimming experience, fostering a deep connection between humans and the natural world.

Champions of the Environment and Sport

The Sipalay leg not only celebrated the athleticism of swimmers but also highlighted local efforts in environmental conservation. Winners were awarded medals and wooden trophies, symbolizing the event’s commitment to sustainability.

As the circuit continues, it invites adventurers, athletes, and environmental advocates to be part of a meaningful journey that celebrates the spirit of competition and the essence of sustainable tourism.
