How to Get Back on Track After Being Cut Off in a Triathlon Race

Overcome Setbacks.

As a triathlete, I know the feeling of training for months, putting in the hard work, and then getting cut off in a race. It can be a crushing blow to your confidence and motivation. But, as someone who has been in that position and come out the other side, I can tell you that it is possible to get over it and come back stronger.

Way back in 2017, I did NOT finish an IRONMAN race.

First and foremost, it’s important to remember that getting cut off in a race is not a reflection of your worth as a person or an athlete. It doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough or that you’re not capable of achieving your goals. It’s simply a setback, and like any setback, it can be overcome.

One of the best ways to get over a setback like this is to focus on the positives. Yes, it may be disappointing that you didn’t finish the race, but think about all the progress you’ve made in your training. Remember all the small victories, like completing a long training run or swim, or hitting a new personal record. Reflect on the dedication and commitment you’ve shown in your training and how much stronger you’ve become. And remind yourself that you’ll get better with more training and experience.

It’s also important to focus on the experience itself. Races are not just about the finish line, but also about the journey. Reflect on the beautiful scenery you saw, the people you met, and the camaraderie you shared with other athletes. These are the moments that make the race special and will be cherished for a long time.

Another important step is to take some time to reflect on what went wrong in the race. Were you properly trained and prepared? Did you make any mistakes during the race? Once you have a clear understanding of what went wrong, you can take steps to correct it and prevent it from happening again in the future. This can be a valuable learning experience for future races.

It’s also important to take care of yourself both physically and mentally during this time. Make sure you’re getting enough rest and eating well to help your body recover. And, don’t be afraid to seek out help if you need it. Whether it’s talking to a coach, a therapist, or a friend, getting support from others can be incredibly helpful. It’s important to talk through your feelings and not to suppress them, as it will only prolong the healing process.

Finally, don’t give up on your goals. Set a new goal and work towards it. It can be a small goal, like completing a sprint triathlon, or a big goal, like completing an Ironman. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something you’re passionate about and that will inspire you to keep going. It’s important to have a sense of purpose and something to work towards.

Getting cut off in a race can be a difficult and discouraging experience, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the road. By focusing on the positives, reflecting on what went wrong, taking care of yourself, and setting new goals, you can overcome this setback and come back stronger than ever. Remember, every great triathlete has faced setbacks and challenges, but they didn’t let that stop them. You are stronger than you think. Keep pushing and never give up. Embrace the journey, and keep your eyes on the horizon. The finish line is just a milestone, and not the end goal.
