Condura Skyway Marathon 2011 Results and Review

It’s been awhile since I last ran road race that I paid for.  Nope I don’t do bandits I just think the reg fee is already too high for my budget for a running event.

Things changed when Mara,  member of www.swimbikerun.ph and a member of the team that I’m coaching, Tri-Dynamite, decided to join the Condura Run Skyway Marathon. At first I said to myself no way I’m going to pay 1k+ for a 21k run! But in the end, I ended up registering because I really wanted to be with my team (2 of them actually) as they take on their first 21k.

Boy was I in for a big surprise. The event was really organized. Now, do I  regret paying that much for a run? Surprisingly, its a big NO. Big props to the Condura Skyway Marathon organizers. You guys did one heck of a job. Definitely a must race event for 2012.

What did you guys think about the run?

Race organization is superb. Plenty of sponges, ice cold water, and some flavored soda. Plenty of volunteers, more lighting this year on previously dark sections of road. This race was the “real deal” when it comes to organization. You get what you pay for. The giveaways were great, and I spent quite a bit of time at the Coors tent, in spite of technically not being allowed to avail of the free beer samples (only 42 and 21K runners). I think they pitied my general apperance post-race, and let me have a few anyway!

My only negative comment on the whole day, is that something is lost from the race atmosphere, with the split start at two locations. It was hard to get a real good vibe at stodgy Makati Stock Exchange. Ft Boni was going with fireworks, etc. I think I prefered last year’s packed location and general madness to the start. Yes, this was well organized, but you got the feeling that it had become almost too big of a race now (over 13,000 runners). In the interest of safety and organization, a bit of “soul” was lost. But overall, this is a must race, I really liked it.

I’ll give this race 4 SBR stars out of 5.

4 only because I’m not a big fan of having 2 different locations as your start and finish line. No fun going back all the way to Ayala after rocking the pavement.

Pictures coming up soon!

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)
