Ask The Coach | Bike Recommendation | Question 1

From: Jake Benedicto | Makati City.

QUESTION : Hi Coach Jomac! I just wanna ask what bike can you recommend for those who’s just starting out.

COACH JOMAC : It depends on your budget, but I always recommend getting triathlon specific or time trial type frame first instead of road frames. Starting with a road set up and then later on upgrading to a triathlon set up will just end up costing you more. In most triathlon races, the bike leg is in a non-drafting format. It would be to your advantage to use a time trial set up in this case. Also, the triathlon/ time trial set up, which usually has a higher and more forward saddle position than a road set up, allows for a better transition to running. But if you only have a road frame available for use, you may also set it up in a triathlon/ time trial position.

Looking for second hand equipment is also a good option. My tip to every beginner is to ask an experienced and knowledgeable friend to accompany you when you are scouting for items or about to make a purchase. This can help you avoid purchasing overpriced or poor quality equipment.

The size of the frame is also very important. Local bike shops offer bike fitting services, but if you are on a budget, you may also search online for some easy and practical guides to determining your proper frame size.

A triathlete making a comeback and a true blue Scorpio. That sums it up quite nicely :)

  1. Do not know how to bike but been joining fun runs since October 2012 (3 10KM runs, 1 15KM run, 1 16.8KM run). Would like to try Duathlon next year. Any Advice?
