Race Review :

To be honest, when we were invited by the Cornerstone Group to cover the race, we had zero idea about the race (aside from what was submitted to us for posting) and the info posted on their website ( We had little knowledge too about the organizers but we agreed to cover it as we made a vow after Mt. Mayon Triathlon to cover as many races in the province as possible.

Turns out, it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

The Cornerstone Group is no little player. Armed with their own race gear and equipment, the race had all the bells and whistles of a major race but decked with the unique atmosphere of a provincial race and the warm hospitality of the people of Cebu and San Remigio.

The race has two distances. The full 8080 (1.8k swim, 65k bike, 14k run) and the 4040 half (900m swim, 32.5k bike, 7k run). Slightly longer than an olympic distance but not as long as a 70.3. We’re not sure how many out of the 200+ participants finished but we’re pretty damn sure that if you’re one of those who did, you’re one tough cookie.

We don’t know if it was just really hot that day or if it’s really just like that, everyday, in San Remigio. The 12:30pm start didn’t help either. The unique thing about a late start is that you’re not pressured to wake up at 3am in the morning for a 6am gun start. You can take your time eating your breakfast and even have a relaxing coffee session after. One downside is, unless you’re experienced enough, is that you’ll most likely skip lunch. Which can be a problem if you haven’t mastered your nutrition yet. You’ll start the race hungry.

The race had a lot of innovations as well. One of which was the neon green lane line under the water. Swimmers just followed the line without having to worry if they’re going in the right direction! We had no idea about it (we didn’t swim), until we heard one participant raving about it after the race. The race packet was pretty damn loaded as well. Aside from the usual stuff, the loot bag (which turns into a helmet bag) even contained a customized 8080 San Remigio Triathlon bike cover! Yep, very handy for those races whereyou have to leave your bike in transition overnight.

Verdict :

We’ll be honest, the race has its own quirks and errors. It was far from perfect. We noticed little things that they can improve on like the registration process and the transition flow. All of which we relayed to the organizers after the race.

But to sum it up, in just one weekend, our thoughts about this race quickly  turned from “hang on to your seats”, into “man, this race has lots of potential”, and finally into, “a MUST DO race for 2015″.

Cornerstone Group informed us that they are planning to do a lot of races next year. If you’re on the lookout for a good and well organized race in the province, put their races in your hit list. Take our word for it. You will not regret it.
