Training A Beauty Queen

So, how exactly do you train a Beauty Queen? SBR.ph contributor, Coach Ivan Leopando, of Attack Tri Team shares what it’s like to train Carlene Aguilar, a former beauty queen, and crowned Miss Philippines Earth and Binibining Pilipinas World 2005, who’s now slowly getting into the world of triathlon.

Ito ang pinaka mahirap na na handle ko. Kase siyempre “beauty queen” nga, so kailangan ingatan. ?

Anyways, when I started training Carlene Aguilar, a former Ms. World 2005, ang gusto niya talaga, mag pa-payat lang. ? Madali lang siya turuan dahil competitive naman siya at malakas ang loob.

SWIMMING

Nag-start kami sa swim (basic) and dahil nga good listener siya, nakuha niya agad in one month then she joined the Biathle and got 3rd Place in her age group. Then she got interested to pursue multisport kase on that day, I have other students training for the upcoming Ironman 70.3. So dun na nag umpisa.

BIKING

Then I started teaching her how to ride a bike (basic) and after a month of doing basic bike handling skills, like how to use the brakes & shifters, in a vacant lot in MOA, we started riding easy. We began by telling her what to do slowly even while some riders were shouting, “Bike! bike! bike!”. ?

Then after 2 weeks of practice, when she started to develop confidence on the bike, we started to use clipless pedals. I usually teach clipless pedals drills like mounting & dismounting in a open area with grass para pag bumagsak eh ok lang ?.

RUNNING

Ito ang pinaka-ayaw niya kase medyo mahirap daw at napapagod siya agad. ? Pero sabi ko nga, ito ang pinaka-madaling gawin kase kahit sino, puwedeng tumakbo. You just have to learn the proper running form and also love running. Then ayun na, nag-reg na siya for her first triathlon which was done in a pool and she 4th place (not bad) ?. Then (she) joined NAGT and got 8th place in the sprint category and then 5th place in the Open Water Challenge 2k distance.

We are now preparing for her first standard distance, Tri United 1 (1.5k Swim/40km Bike/10km Run) on February.

After that, we start training for her first Ironman 70.3 in Cebu.
